History

Historical Photo The Building was built in 1903. It first opened as Wainui tea rooms in 1908, catering to people catching the ferry to Port Chalmers and Dunedin. When the road was improved, the ferries stopped and the two elderly spinsters altered the building by offering lodgings and taking care of sick sailors. During this time it also served as the local mortuary until in later years, part of the building became the local post office.

This building, rich in local history has been lovingly restored to its former glory. It is now the 1908 Café, Restaurant and Bar still catering to the hungry traveler and local alike .
