Welcome to the 1908 Cafe
1908 Café, restaurant and bar is situated in the heart of the Otago Peninsula in Portobello village. Portobello is the gateway to all the peninsulas scenic and wild life attractions. Including the royal albatross colony, yellow eyed penguins, hooker sea lion and Larnach castle to name but a few. All within a very scenic 30 minute drive of Dunedin.
In the summer months you can chose to dine in our sunny garden area under the shade of an umbrella. Or in the cooler winter months, soak up the heat off the open fire and old restored coal range.

Dining at 1908 is ultimately about one thing and one thing only… enjoyment. Something that can either be done alone or with good company, matched with or without wine.
Our food is prepared with a great deal of love and respect to create an enjoyable dining experience. Our kitchen philosophy is simple; we use the freshest seasonal ingredients and with time and attention, produce simple delicious food.
The kitchen at 1908 makes everything from start to finish. Breads, stocks, sauces, all evolve into the menu you see today.
But most importantly we enjoy the simple pleasures of cooking good food.
